The 411 on 911
It’s the ultimate “Where Were You” moment. Or perhaps the second such moment, after the assassination of JFK.
Everyone today is remember where they were when airliners streaked into the World Trade Center and Pentagon. As usual, I have no exciting story to tell. I was just back from my brother’s wedding (had to fly in from DC, ironically) and sleeping off a hangover on my couch. Pager went off and I had to run to a Big Apple to use a pay phone.
Really? A pay phone just eight years ago?
My editor babbled something about planes hitting skyscrapers. I figured she was drunk. Went back to my apartment and turned on CNN.
Strange days indeed.

Love and Theft. I was driving to a music store to buy a Bob Dylan CD when I heard on the radio that a small plane hit a building in NYC. Music store? CD? Now I download all my music onto an MP3 player.

There were music stores back then? And phone booths?

Doing laundry. Boring, I know, but there you have it.

Geez a blog post! Building an office building just outside Philly. Close to Naval Air Station & we were in their flight pattern when the scrambled. Suckers were loud n’ low. I shut the job down before noon. Deb hysterical on the phone. The next day we put up a hayooge American flag strapped across the steel facing the turnpike. Gotta love Union Ironworkers – bad asses with big hearts.
JFK? 2nd grade – Teacher was summoned – returned crying & made the announcement. My mother decided the time was right to explain how evil JFK was. (Her opinions still tend to make me nuts)
Will keep future comments shorter unless it’s another 3 months for a post. DE

dropping off my very young children at nana’s and she says come see this we stand in astonishment watching the towers burn…I get to the restaurant and tell Joey to turn the tv on… not alot of correct info coming through at the time… then the Pentagon get hits and seeing that on the tv was like Oh my god we are under attack…I remember feeling a great sense of loss… not knowing what to say or do and feeling scared… what was goin to happen now.. stunned feeling … I remember making pins to wear and everyone at the restaurant wanting one… gathering red and blue ribbon to make pins…standing outside on that Friday evening for a mass candle burning… I can say I have never felt anything like that in my life. The sense of community … telling someone you love them… just incredible.
