Gone

Lost.jpgAftermath: Population Zero is on the National Geographic Channel right now. Sound familiar? It’s a very similar effort to the History Channel’s “Life After People” which debuted in January. What will the planet look like in the days, years, and centuries after we’re gone? Tune in, or be eaten by survivors.

Like the History Channel’s treatment, this one does not try to propose what caused humans to disappear. Too many variables that way. But unlike the earlier presentation, tonight’s presentation suggests that we disappeared in one great moment of singularity. POOF! Gone. Planes still in the sky, cigarettes left burning in ashtrays, cars in motion on the streets. Like a rapture.

  2. LaFlamme Says:

Quite right, Mark. And did you notice that tonight, Las Vegas is one of the first cities to go dark, where in the earlier version, it was one of the last because Hoover Dam, which powers it, has the capacity to stay online without human imput longer than any other powerplant. Interesting contradiction.

  3. LaFlamme Says:

Nicely observed, LaFlamme. And well stated. You really are a sexy beast.

  4. AO Says:

    Says you.

  5. LaFlamme Says:

This one also portends a great human impact on the world after. I’m dying to see that nuclear reactor go up.

  6. LaFlamme Says:

Quite so. I was really cheering for that poodle on the run from larger dogs, though.

  7. LaFlamme Says:

Hey, AO. Just me and LaFlamme around here. Are you watching this post human action?

  8. LaFlamme Says:

Interesting point: migratory bird populations will expand because there are no longer city lights to foul up (fowl up?) their navigation.

  9. AO Says:

You two seem to be having a great time together. Actually, I’m watching Forrest Gump.

  10. LaFlamme Says:

Much more focus on the short term in this NGC account of things. Here comes winter. Expect a good population of those zoo animals to perish.

  11. LaFlamme Says:

Gump is dead, AO. They’re all dead.

  12. LaFlamme Says:

Remarkable use of animals in this presentation. So far, it’s pretty short on special effects, though. George Lucas was in charge of that with the History Channel.

  13. LaFlamme Says:

Very cool special effects in that last sequence. Nothing quite like the greening view of Time Square after three decades of growing. Nary a hooker to be seen in all that flora.

  14. LaFlamme Says:

Ah, we seem to be losing momentum in the latter half. Heavy emphasis on flora and fauna, with stock footage of each. It’s losing that powerful apocalyptic feel and turning into just another NGC presentation. Will it redeem itself in the climax? We’ll find out.

  15. LaFlamme Says:

Very cool. Although I think you have to give the overall “wow” factor the the History Channel’s handling of the concept. This one didn’t build momentum as it went. It didn’t introduce the same sense of uneasiness. The narrator’s voice, ominous at the beginning, was reminiscent of those films you had to watch in high school science class in the second half. Too much emphasis on the same populations of animals and as a result, redundancy. Still worth the viewing though, wouldn’t you say, LaFlamme.

  16. LaFlamme Says:

Absolutely. Wanna go for a beer?

  17. LaFlamme Says:

    Let’s.

  18. MR. Ed Says:

    Geeze, watcha smoking tonite, dude?

  19. Don Goulet Says:

I don’t know if you realize it dude, but your talking with yourself. I’m here to help. Just let me know.

  20. Don Goulet Says:

There ain’t nothing like pre-planning your demise. By the way, the character in this blog wearing a question Mark, where was that taken. Mt. Khatadin?

  21. Sally T. Says:

Mark, do you talk to yourself often? You remind me of Gollum in Lord of the Rings, you freak!

  22. LaFlamme Says:

I searched around for some chat boards on the Population Zero thing and didn’t find any action out there. Like when all the bars are closed, you gotta make your own party.

  23. LaFlamme Says:

That is Khatadin, Don. Good eye. Last summer, winding through the park by car.
