Booze quest

panhandle.jpgYou see? This is the way to panhandle. At least once a week, I’m molested outside a corner store or out on the Park Street curb by change seekers with a story. They need a bus ticket to go visit their sick mom. They’re taking up a collection for the local Boy’s Club. They need money for a razor so they’ll look clean-shaven for that job interview at Lockheed Martin. And then they stumble away with fistfuls of silver only to emerge from the store moments later with a 40.

I don’t have a problem with the shivering need for booze. I will always dig deep for those store front beggars who are clear and honest about their needs. This guy, I’d peel off a few bucks and then try to introduce him to the many joys of cheap Pabst Blue Ribbon. He wouldn’t take it, though. Even roadside panhandlers have their standards.

You’re in the 40 district, what do you expect?

Now a great reporter would have gone to Union and Turner Sts in Auburn, and taken a picture of a guy who actually holds a similar sign on nice days. Instead this reporter merely copies one from the Internet.

What’s more fun is to offer to take them to their dying sisters house, or pump the 2 dollars of gas they need, or buy them a lunch. Even better, take them up on that “Will work for food” offer. A day of brush clearing for a couple of burgers and a soda, what a deal.

AH! Mr. Ed! You’re the guy I’ve seen on the corner of Union & Turner St. holding the sign. NOW I can put a face to all of your aliases!
